👉🏾 For our melanated fam, we’ll also be creating an AFFINITY SPACE, Global Majority EXCLUSIVE beginners sessions (led by an equally melanated crew) later this July/August at the Liverpool African Caribbean Centre. These are FUNDED and will be centred exclusively on our experience, needs, and vibes! And of course, at the end, you’ll be able to join our Katumba band tribe! Beat It – Katumba Drumming Beginner Sessions

Our Katumba beginners sessions are devised as a 6-week introduction to the Katumba experience (no, you don’t have to attend ALL the sessions (see more in the FAQ’s below) including rhythm, technique, cultural influences and how our music interconnects with movement and body wellbeing as we wear our drums. This is the first stage of every Katumba community drummer’s journey!

When: 6 sessions: Tuesdays 10th, 17th, 24th June, 1st, 8th, 15th July
Times: 6.30pm – 8pm (arrival from 6.15pm)
Where: Katumba Culture Hub, Liverpool
Who: 18+ EveryBODY is invited – no experience necessary, and complete beginners are completely welcome!

Prices: These sessions are not funded. We are a not-for-profit micro-organisation with an accessible approach to participation, whilst having to cover our costs.

  • For all 6 sessions: £60 Full Price | £40.00 Low Income*
  • Per Session: £12 | £8 Low Income*
  • Pay What You Can: For those facing extenuating financial circumstances

*Currently, according to the Department of Work and Pensions, any family earning around £571 per week before tax. We consider self-ID valid. We trust that our community will always pay for what they can afford.

About The Teachers

Ritchie Tunstall is the Co-founder and Musical Director of Katumba Drumming & Movement, recognised nationally and internationally for his knowledgeable, inclusive and caring approach. Click here to learn more about Ritchie.

Juliana Pinheiro Landim is a musician, mover and certified yoga teacher from Recife, Brazil. She’s also the Creative & Movement Director of Katumba Drumming & Movement – and our Co-Founder.

FAQs

Do I need to attend every single session?

No, if you need to miss a couple of the sessions, that’s totally fine! But in order to be invited to join the band you’ll need to attend AT LEAST THREE SESSIONS.

I am a student – does that count as low income?

Yes, absolutely. All those who count as students/concessions are welcome to pay the low-income rate.

Do I need to do this course to join the band?

Yes. Unless you are already a very experienced percussionist (in which case, let us know), this is the best route for you to join the band.

By doing this course, will I be automatically in the band?

No – there are several parts to your learning journey. It also depends on what drums are available. However, you will absolutely be part of our Katumba community, and we welcome everybody with open arms!
