We’re excited to announce the return of our Routes & Roots Beginner Drumming Sessions, starting on Tuesday 23rd September at the incredible African Caribbean Centre, Liverpool.
These weekly drumming and movement sessions are designed as a safe and joyful space for people who identify as Black, Brown, Mixed Race, Melanated or Global Majority. Routes & Roots is all about connection. Participants will experience Katumba’s unique fusion of rhythms, drawing from Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Indigenous, African, and UK influences, through an inclusive, uplifting approach.
The sessions have been created as an affinity space to promote drumming and movement practices for wellbeing, community and connection. They are holistic, decolonial, and ancestrally inspired, guided by the philosophy: “I am, because we are.”
These sessions run throughout Black History Month and culminate in our Halloween Carnival, offering you the opportunity to perform alongside the Katumba band. Our Halloween Carnival is a highlight of our year and not one to miss!
Routes & Roots was developed as a direct response to the racist riots in Liverpool in summer 2024. Our aim is to support the health and wellbeing of Global Majority communities through music, movement, and therapeutic practices. Research has long shown the powerful impact of collective music-making on reducing isolation, lowering stress and anxiety, and improving mental and physical health. We’re bringing this powerful practice to the community here in Toxteth, and beyond!
Join us for weekly beginner sessions, starting Tuesday 23rd September, 18:30 – 20:15.
