Our Creative Themes and Aesthetics
At Katumba our creative direction has evolved to reveal several distinct performative strands which we offer as options when you book us.
We call these our themes, or Aesthetics, and they include Canavalia and Dystopia, and our Christmas-activating themes of Drumming Santas and Cheeky Elves.
We also develop themes brought to us by our amazing clients!
What theme would you like to see brought to life with the drama of the drums majestically complemented by costumes, illuminations, fire work, dancers and performers from the Katumba troupe?

The three most famous aesthetics of Katumba
Carnivalia
Our best known aesthetic is Carnivalia.
She is WOW! She is the spirit of Carnival. She will sweep you away in a whirling dervish of colour, movement and energy – you just have to both hang on tight and completely let go!
Carnivalia is a rainbow medley. She is at the forefront of our expression when Katumba does Pride every year.
Carnivalia is born of the origins of Carnival itself, which are with Afro Brazilian slaves from the diaspora.
She brings together and celebrates the immense melting pot of influences and culture involved in our ideas of Carnival.
She makes a party so that everyone around her can celebrate their identity and take up the space they deserve.
***NEW***Dystopia
The dark side to our light that has been welcomed by us more and more, is ‘Dystopia’.
We all have a dark side – let’s bring it in, in fact, let’s revel in it!
Don’t be afraid. We are only human. We need to watch out – and also to acknowledge. Dystopia is drama! With an edge.
Dystopia summons the post-apocalyptic world where anything goes! Where survival IS thrival!
Witness the evocation of a new world order which is the natural culmination of our failure to look after our people and our planet.
Where resources are scant and people are wild and set for survival.
It’s exciting, as well as scary – how would you survive the new world order? Tap into your dark side and enjoy the feeling of anarchy and independence that comes with the darkness…

Katumba ARE Christmas!
We bring the Christmas vibes to any event, with so much energy and joy it has to be seen to be believed!
Our Christmas performances have our two main themes at their heart – the cheekiest, gleefullest of Elves, and our super jolly Twelve Drummers Drumming.
As always within our themes and aesthetic choices, we happily tailor to your event and creative ideas/requirements.
We bring our creative production skills with us to every performance, and are creative co-conspirators with you!
Creating points of shared experience in our shared spaces, within the beat of the drums is a spiritual experience as well as a Christmas spectacular.
Emotions are never far away this time of year, and our drumming performances as well as being so fun and uplifting, are also reported to be moving and connecting for hearts.

Cheeky Elves
These elves will not be controlled! Their gleeful ways are irrepressible. They are cute, funny, lit and lippy. They bring the noise and spread the biggest smiles. Everyone of every age loves our Elf pack!

Ever seen a flock of Santas descend upon a place creating totemic, spirit lifting beats that get everyone stopping to stare? It is a sight and sound to behold and is one of the most immersive and irresistible ways to whip up a huge amount of Christmas cheer and happiness.
