Leigh-Angel Bevan: Creative Partner & Teacher (PGCE)

Drumming since she was old enough to reach her mum’s congas, Leigh is a professional teacher/percussionist with a varied musical and performance background.

Experienced as a performer and leader in a range of world styles – including Caribbean Steel pans, Indonesian Gamelan, African djembe and drum-kit – Leigh toured internationally as the first female European drummer of “24 Festival Drums (24节令鼓笔记)”, a Chinese/Malaysian cultural heritage art that combines drumming with movement and martial art. As Director of the group, she composed music and choreography for performances at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, London O2 Arena, and Johor Bahru stadium in Malaysia

Leigh has spent many years championing music and performance as a platform to build community  and boost confidence in individuals of all ages. Whilst teaching, she spearheaded group drumming as a tool for educational engagement, intervention and positive wellbeing in young learners.

Originally from London, Leigh moved to Liverpool for University in 2009 and instantly fell in love with the city! She joined Katumba in 2017 and quickly showed her passion and capability: with diverse arts, teaching and management experience/qualifications including

  • BA Hons Music and English Literature (First Class Honours)
  • MA Victorian Literature
  • PGCE Primary Education
  • Director 24 Festival Drums Liverpool
  • Director/Trustee Liverpool Guild
  • President Liverpool Band Society

Leigh manages our website, communications, marketing, educational projects and is a lead workshop facilitator, teacher and band leader.

She also provides an understanding of mainstream education and theory to help develop our schools workshop packages, where we deliver sessions with pre-school right up to University and professional level.
